Haakenson Electric Projects

Orthodox Church Restorations

The Orthodox Church restorations took place on several Aleutian and Pribilof islands. These projects presented complex challenges as the buildings were built in the early 1900?s. Church fixtures had to be carefully removed then packed for shipment to Portland to be restored. The fixtures were converted for electrical use and now hang beautifully in church sanctuaries.

South Anchorage Ground Thaw

In the winter of 1993, Davis Constructors tasked Haakenson Electric with the challenge to thaw enough ground to allow an early start of 108 foundation pads for the South Anchorage K-Mart store. A plan was developed by Tim Haakenson to use heat trace, insulation vapor barrier and $4,000 of electrical energy. The system was energized mid-February and by March 1, Davis Constructors was excavating and preparing the project.

Marioff Hi-Fog System

The Marioff Hi-Fog water mist protection system was developed in Finland. The unique design and application of Hi-Fog spray heads, valves and cylinder units allow a high momentum discharge of small water droplets. The limited water volume employed by this system avoids the negative side effects of traditional fire protection systems such as water damage and long clean-up times.

The key to this system's performance is the small piping size and is a key reason Haakenson Electric was awarded installation work for several of these jobs. The Marioff Hi-Fog piping used is identical to the conduit used by electricians, as opposed to the large piping used by traditional fires systems.

The success of Haakenson Electric's first Hi-Fog project in Shugnak in 2006 led to the invitation to complete Marioff Hi-Fog water and mist protection systems in three additional schools.  Our electricians completed installations in the Gustuvas, Mentasta Lake and Dot Lake schools during the summer of 2007.  Recently, Haakenson Electric was awarded additional contracts to install Hi-Fog systems in Kasigluk, Mekoryuk, and Good News Bay during the summer of 2009.  In 2010 and 2011, Hi-Fog systems for Kalskag High School, Alyeska Pipeline Pump Stations 4 and 5, along with schools located at Chefornak and Little Diomede.

Eielson Visitor Center

The Eielson Visitors Center is one of the most interesting projects ever undertaken by Haakenson Electric.  Work began in 2006 and continued through 2008.The new Visitors Center opened to the public in June of 2008 after a two-year construction periord.  This facility, located sixty miles inside Denali National Park, contains a theater, restrooms, offices, an apartment, and a bookstore, and is completely off the power grid.

As part of a National Park Service sustainability initiative, the EVC meet the criteria for a Platinum LEED accreditation.  This is the first facility in Alaska, and the first in the NPS portfolio to achieve this goal.

LEED includes the use of recycled materials and renewable resources, low water usage, and the utilization of renewable energy sources. Several energy efficiency strategies have been included at the Eielson Visitor Center at Denali National Park: high performance windows, energy efficient lighting, natural ventilation, energy recovery ventilators with multi-speed fans servicing theater and offices, demand controlled ventilation (CO2 control) of energy recovery ventilators, multi-speed fans in furnaces and advanced day lighting design which has been incorporated at the center.

Renewable energy strategies at the site include the implementation of a hybrid generator system with photovoltaic panels and a battery bank, installing a solar hot water heating system for the public restrooms, and constructing a small hydroelectric system in a nearby stream.

Haakenson Electric is proud to have provided the electrical expertise necessary to implement these cutting edge energy solutions at Eielson Visitor Center.
